The Master Servant
lyrics by Julee Whaley

When Christ knelt down that night in pure humility
And took a cloth and dipped it in the water tenderly
To cleanse the tired and dusty feet of those he soon would leave,
He taught a pattern to the twelve he hoped we all would weave.

And when Christ turned to Peter to repeat the task
The Apostle felt this service was too much to ask.
And Peter said, "Thou shalt never wash my feet!"
Then our Savior kindly answered him with words so sweet:

If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me
For it's the cleansing power I have that allows you to be free.
It's a simple truth, so many cannot see
That if I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.

He said, If I, your Lord and Master now have washed your feet
An example I have set that you should all repeat
For when ye serve each other, happy are ye
As I've found my hapiness in serving thee.

So when I kneel to pray, no doubt unworthily
And ask the Lord, from these burdens please rescue me.
His kind rebuke to faithful Peter echoes in my mind
And reminds me that his grace extends to all mankind.

If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me
For it's the cleansing power I have that allows you to be free
It's a simple truth, so many cannot see
That if I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.

Then wash my hands and head, Oh Lord, wilt thou make me clean.
